We love to sew! Its brilliant, it takes brain power and patience.

Let’s face it – sewing is where it’s at.

At Magpie Makes we offer a range of sewing and textiles sessions, with clubs, workshops and courses for all ages. See below for more information.

hand sewing

Hand sewing is the perfect counterbalance to today’s instant, digital society – it takes perseverance and focus – and absolutely no screens are involved. In one of our sewing clubs you pick up and put down a project over a number of weeks until you have something that has been hand-crafted with love and will be treasured forever.

We run after school sewing clubs again at:

  • Thames Ditton Junior School

  • Grand Avenue Primary School

  • Rowan Preparatory School

  • St Matthew's Primary School

  • Fern Hill Primary School

  • Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School

  • Hurst Park Primary School

  • Surbiton Preparatory School

  • St Lawrence Junior School

We also run a weekly sewing club on a Thursday, 3.30pm-4.30pm in our studio which is available for children between years 3-6 and can accommodate approximately 10 children. If your school doesn't currently have a Magpie Makes sewing club and this is of interest to you, please do get in touch and we will add your child to our waiting list.

"I just wanted to email to let you know how much Ellora has been enjoying sewing club. I've spent forever trying to find her something that helps her relax and deal with the pressure of school and it seems sewing is the thing! She looks forward to Mondays so much because it's Magpie Makes day and raves about it every week. Thank you for all your efforts, care and attention!”

machine sewing

For older children who enjoy hand sewing, a natural progression is to learn how to construct a garment or a simple bag or cushion on a sewing machine. At Magpie Makes we have six John Lewis sewing machines which are very well used!

If your child would be interested in a sewing tutorial we can offer 1:1 sessions or small group sessions by prior arrangement in our studio. On our team we have a very experienced dressmaker, Chantal, who also has a degree in Fashion Design. She loves teaching children on the machine and every Saturday afternoon she runs a dressmaking course for kids aged 11+.

"My 11-year-old grandaughter has just come home with the most beautiful summer dress! She chose the fabric herself and then spent four happy afternoons cutting and constructing it under Chantal's patient instruction. She loves dressmaking and I'm so glad she's learning such a wonderful skill.”

Many times we meet young sewing enthusiasts in our clubs. They are creative sparks who thrive on the projects we create for them and develop real passion for working with fabrics and thread. When they have finished primary school and moved up into secondary, they will be exposed to well equipped DT departments but sometimes they yearn for a little extra inspiration from an expert.

Our textiles course leaders, Natalie Mabelis and Maia Lafleur both have unrivalled expertise in the creative textiles field and they love running our Saturday morning course. The group is limited to eight students and the projects are creatively stretching and technically challenging with just enough input from the course leaders to ensure some beautiful results.

"My teenage daughter used to come and enjoy the Magpie sewing club at school and so we jumped at the chance for her to continue developing her skills. The exploring textiles course is stretching her creatively and has also given her the confidence to take textiles GCSE at school. Maia and Natalie are inspiring teachers with patience and sensitivity to each child's needs.”
